What is Propietary hardware?

Buster Exline: They are essentially saying the dell has hardware (components) on it's pc's, which, if you need to replace, you can only get them from Dell (or a source authorized to service their pc's). And they're further saying these dell components are "junky".I guess the people you've overheard have had some difficulty with Dell.I have maintained Dell's for some of my family members -- no problem. If you need to add ram, or a pci card, these items are not propriety, and can be purchased just about anywhere.Dell isn't a bad choice if you're looking to purchase a pc, however, they often are not the best "bang for the buck" choice when you consider features on other pc's, along with rebates- if available....Show more

Rivka Killmer: Proprietary hardware refers to components that will only work with one another and not with other parts of other manufacturers or models. Dells do in fact have proprietary power supplies and motherboards that only work with each other, s! ince their pins are arranged differently than regular ATX psu's. so if a regular power supply is plugged into a Dell motherboard, the components will fail.
