Do rental car companies track what you do with a rented car?

Von Houskeeper: Maybe, maybe not. Most rental companies have a "box" attached to their cars that record various things but there are as many things they record as their are boxes and rental companies. If you don't mistreat a car and don't speed, etc. Why worry ?

Charis Deguzman: Some rental cars have GPS units in them that record your travel.

Mitchell Pickens: Some of them do, but probably don't track things like what you're talking about.A lot of companies put a GPS locator in their vehicles, just in case the car gets stolen. Rental cars are a favourite amongst thieves and joyriders, for I don't know what reason. But they're not going to track the vehicle's every move down to how fast you accelerate or if you drove at 10 over the limit, because that would be a waste of time. Whatever tickets you get from the police are your business, because cops ticket drivers and not owners. If you get a camera ticket or parking violation, they just bill it to your cr! edit card (which is why they ask for one even if you're paying cash to rent the car) and be done with it.But if you don't get caught, no big deal. Renting out vehicles is their business, driving within the law is your business....Show more
