Bernie Cerra: Jewellery can be buried with you or cremated with you however if you are cremated the jewellery will melt and is then removed when the ashes are passed under a magnet or sieved. I always suggest to families that if there is a specific piece of jewellery that they want to go with someone that they place it in the ashes casket afterward, that way you are sure that it is with them. As for the suggestion that "thieving gits" steal from the dead , as an undertaker I find this very offensive. I can assure you that jewellery, or anything else that is placed with the deceased, remains there and is NOT removed, personally I cannot think of anything more disgusting. Unfortunately, having read some of the comments that have been placed on here and on other answers, funeral directors for some reason seem to be regarded as unscrupulous salesmen at best and thieves at worst. I can only speak for myself but I can assure you that the main reason that I do this is out of a d! esire to be able to help someone through a traumatic time, as for selling coffins, unless someone asks me for something different I provide a standard basic dignified coffin, unless people have strong views there is no need to spend a fortune. Judging by some of the other answers some people have clearly had bad experiences and I would suggest that they complain to one of the 2 regulatory organisations for undertakers who take these things very seriously. Alternatively come and spend a day working with me and see exactly what we do, perhaps it would open your eyes if you saw first hand exactly how things are done instead of relying on old wives tales!...Show more
